Grow vegetables with leftover supermarket produce using gardener hack
As the cost of food continues to skyrocket, more people are seeking ways to save money on their weekly groceries.
Supermarket prices for fresh produce have soared in recent months, driven by inflation, supply chain disruption, and extreme weather conditions that have affected crop yields.
However, there’s a growing trend that might help ease the financial burden, growing your own food.
Many home gardeners have found that producing their own fruits and vegetables not only saves money in the long run but also provides fresher, more nutritious options.
Simon Akeroyd shared his simple method for transforming a single supermarket sweetcorn cob into a productive crop for the following year in a Tiktok video.
He explained: “Sweetcorn from the supermarket can easily be used to grow your own fresh corn.
“Simply leave a cob to dry out, collect up the dry kernels, and place the seeds in an envelope.
“Next spring, sow your kernels in pots, and plant them out in the garden a few weeks later.”
Pointing to a flourishing healthy corn growing from the ground, Akeroyd added: “Here are my delicious sweetcorn straight from your own garden.”
With the right care, a small back garden or even a balcony can yield a bounty of produce.
Beyond sweetcorn, crops like tomatoes, lettuce, and beans are also easy to grow at home, and they can significantly reduce the amount spent at the grocery store over time.
