Another weekend of Premier League fixtures has underlined the need for a selection of struggling sides to recruit in January. Manchester City’s agonising derby loss was their eighth defeat in 11 matches – a staggering fall from grace for the reigning champions.

But even the victors, Manchester United, are likely to be active in the winter market as Ruben Amorim looks to start building a squad in his own image. Erik ten Hag was given huge financial backing at Old Trafford, while Amorim and his team of transfer chiefs may have to be more selective.

Deals are also sure to be done near the bottom of the table with Southampton, Wolves and Ipswich Town all in relegation danger.
