There are plenty of interesting cleaning hacks that promise to leave your home looking spotless using only natural ingredients. Some of the most popular ones nearly always involve lemons, vinegar, or baking soda. However, this one cleaning trick involving tea bags might be unfamiliar to many.

When it comes to vacuuming, many people can be put off by the lingering smell that comes from carrying out the chore, and that is down to all the dirt and grime it is constantly sucking up. While none one wants their houses smelling musty after taking time out to vacuum the whole place, it’s a chore that has to be done. 

Therefore Brits have been advised to put tea bags in their vacuum cleaners which will help eliminate any unpleasent smells. The hack revealed on Ideal Home explained that black tea acts as a deodoriser, which neutralises all the bad smells.

All you need to do is add a black tea bag into your vacuum dust bag or container and and let it do “all the work”, while you simply carry on with your normal cleaning routine.

Matthew Harrison, a cleaning expert at Price Your Job, said: “Black tea acts as a natural deodoriser, absorbing unpleasant smells such as pet odours and musty scents.”

The expert added that the tea bag “will gradually release its deodorising properties, leaving your vacuum and your home smelling much fresher”.

So for those who aren’t typically keen on vacumming, this simple trick might be the thing that stops you from being put off the chore.

While the tea bag method will help improve the smell, it is important to note that it will not completely transform the scent of your home.

Forrest Webber, founder of Bear Brother’s Cleaning, said: “Let’s be real – if your vacuum smells like a combination of old dog hair and something you’re pretty sure the cat dragged in, that tea bag will have its work cut.

“So yes, it helps, but it won’t turn your vacuum into a luxury spa diffuser.”

That being said it is still worth doing. For the best results, make sure to swap out your tea bag every few months, and despite being obvious, make sure the tea bag you use is dry to save yourself from any diasters.
